01The problem
Budget against actual lived in a monthly spreadsheet that compared current cost with a budget everyone knew was out of date.
02What we built
Reports that compare a baseline with actual cost by job, by cost category and by line item. The baseline can be the original budget or the latest approved forecast, and actuals can be live or frozen at a cut-off date. Anything not allocated to a line is shown rather than hidden, so the detail always adds back to the total.
03The result
Owners and managers read the same reports against the same baseline, and nothing disappears between the detail and the total.
